Historical evolution of Earth's magnetic field

We construct models of the historical evolution of Earth's magnetic field at the core surface. Such models involve a database of several hundred thousand observations that have been collated from old records of the magnetic field made during martime voyages, from marine and continental surveys, from geomagnetic observatories and most recently from satellites. From these we derive global field models which we subsequently analyse to test hypotheses concerning field evolution processes.
